Éiru is one of the holy trinity of goddesses, along with Banba and Fódla, who were said to welcome the first waves of settlers to Ireland. Her name itself, Éiru, means ‘Ireland’ in the old tongue, and she is the embodiment of the blessed isle’s spirit. Some say she was the wife of the great chieftain Mac Gréine, while others claim her as the mother of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Regardless, she’s the symbol of all that is Ireland.
Éiru’s role was to bless the land and its people, to grant prosperity and protect us from harm. When those ancient warriors set foot upon the shores of Ireland, it’s said that Éiru herself stood before them, her radiant beauty shimmering like the sunrise over the Cliffs of Moher. With outstretched arms, she beckoned them to her, promising a home as green and fertile as the valleys of Connemara.
As time passed, and the memory of the old ways faded, Éiru knew her time in the land of the living was drawing to a close. Éiru’s chose her final resting place, a secret tucked away in the mystical county of Kerry. Here you will find Éiru’s floating house, on the still waters in the sacred site of Bonane, a place where the veil between the mortal world and the Otherworld grows thin, and where the magic of the ancients still lingers in the air.
